Arrogant Mathematician Publicly Shames Her Psychology-Studying Boyfriend, Gets What She Deserves

Quora can be an awesome resource, a place where rational, intelligent people come together to have in-depth discussions about important and stimulating topics. However, like anywhere else on the web, it has it’s fair share of pretentious and arrogant contributors who can’t seem to get over themselves, like this “budding mathematician” for example.

The poor woman, obviously doing the superior science, found herself stuck with a boyfriend studying something as lowly as psychology, the science of the human mind and behavior. “I’m planning to be a mathematician and I can’t take his interest seriously,” she wailed. “It’s a joke compared to mine. We have chemistry but his profession/interest in that pop junk is annoying. I prefer intellectual discussions not junk talk.”

Now, whether this was a genuine post, or just a wind-up trying to get a reaction is open to question, but get a reaction it did, in the form of a glorious put down. Using pinpoint logic to defend the complexity and importance of psychology in relation to mathematics, the response eloquently describes the OP’s shortcomings, while suggesting that her psychologist boyfriend could find her as a useful subject for study, if nothing else.

She will no doubt learn, with time, to respect others choices and passions in life, even if they are different to her own. But for now, such a superior attitude is probably not going to stand this student in good stead for the duration of her studies, or her love life for that matter. Scroll down below to read how it unfolded for yourself, as well as see how others reacted to the post. What do you think? Let us know in the comments!

19-Year-Old Student Hides Spy Camera In His Clothing To Take Secret Street Photos In The 1890s

Carl Størmer (1872-1957) enjoyed a hobby that was very, very unusual at the time. He walked around Oslo, Norway in the 1890s with his spy camera and secretly took everyday pictures of people. The subjects in Størmer’s pictures appear in their natural state. It extremely differs from the grave and strict posing trends that dominated in photography during those years.

Carl got his C.P. Stirn Concealed Vest Spy Camera in 1893 when he was studying mathematics at the Royal Frederick University (now, University of Oslo). “It was a round flat canister hidden under the vest with the lens sticking out through a buttonhole,” he told St. Hallvard Journal from in 1942. “Under my clothes I had a string down through a hole in my trouser pocket, and when I pulled the string the camera took a photo.”

Norway’s first paparazzi usually photographed people at the exact time they were greeting him on the street. “I strolled down Carl Johan, found me a victim, greeted, got a gentle smile and pulled. Six images at a time and then I went home to switch [the] plate.” In total, Størmer took a total of about 500 secret images.

His candid photos aside, Størmer was also fascinated with science. He was a mathematician and physicist, known both for his work in number theory and studying the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis).

How Introverted Mathematician Beat 99% Of Other Marathon Runners By Avoiding People

Social anxiety can be annoying and frustrating, but believe it or not, it can sometimes come in handy as well.

A Tumblr user named Riley, who studies mathematics at the University of Texas, recently blogged about a friend who ran a local marathon and finished in record time. It seemed an unlikely story at first, given that the guy was an introverted, awkward mathematician, but his avoidance of “making small-talk with randos” – or rather, making an effort to avoid socializing with other runners – turned out to be his source of strength in the end.

We don’t know who this brave soul is, but he’s made a pretty good case against anyone who claims that introverts can’t be productive. Read the entire hilarious story below, and let us know if your lack of social skills has worked towards your advantage before!

3D-Printed Sculptures Bloom Under A Strobe Light

John Edmark can transform a static sculpture into dynamic animation. The “bloom’s” animation effect is achieved by progressive rotations of the golden ratio, phi (ϕ), the same ratio which nature uses to create the spiral patterns in sunflowers. “The rotational speed and strobe rate of the bloom are synchronized so that one flash occurs every time the bloom turns 137.5º (the angular version of phi),” Edmark explains. He calls his work a celebration of patterns underlying space and growth. “I employ precise mathematics in the design and fabrication of my work. I do this neither out of a desire to exhibit precision per se, nor to exalt the latest technology, but because the questions I’m trying to formulate and answer about spatial relationships can only be addressed with geometrically exacting constructions.”
